Every paving project is different, and figuring out which mix to use for optimal pavement performance is integral to having a long-lasting driving surface. Keep reading to find out which asphalt mix is right for you and your business.
Deciding Factors
The first factor in making an informed decision about proper asphalt mix is cost control. Employing a paving company that has its own paving plant ensures that there are no extra costs incurred by having to use a middleman to make the asphalt. Similarly, no middleman means that you and the paving company you hire have total control over what goes into the asphalt mix. The mix will be tailored to your exact demands and needs.
Hot Mix Asphalt
Hot mix asphalt is essentially the ‘standard’ type of asphalt. Building material and aggregate will be heated to around 300 degrees Fahrenheit and laid down on the paving surface will still be at an extremely high temperature. This makes hot mix asphalt ideal for installation in warmer summer or spring months. Laying down hot mix when the ground is too cold will lead to it cooling too quickly, increasing the chance of an uneven surface. Keep in mind that hot mix requires lots of fuel to heat and keep warm, so the price is sometimes higher.
Warm Mix Asphalt
A warm mix is a middle ground between hot and cold asphalt mixes. It is manufactured at around 225 degrees Fahrenheit, which allows less petroleum to be used in manufacturing and heat retention. Warm mixes can be transported farther distances and laid during a wider array of monthly temperatures. Warm mixes also produce less dust, smoke, and fumes when produced and laid. This makes warm mixes better for the environment and for the health of the workers laying it down.
Cold Mix Asphalt
Cold mix is manufactured and stored at low temperatures, which makes it a difficult product to work with. The added difficulty essentially eliminates the use of cold mix for large-scale products. Cold mix is typically only used for repairs or for surfaces that are not used for heavy travel. It is worth noting, however, that cold mix is the most environmentally friendly option, since it uses a mix of oils and additives rather than fuel for production.
