The Differences between Asphalt and Cement Paving

Construction experts find ways to make paving better, more stylish, and more durable for their clients. For instance, in recent times, many people have preferred asphalt paving over cement or concrete. Many may not know or recognize the difference between the two paving systems, but they are distinct in nature and other factors.

The knowledge of the distinctions is important as it helps you make an informed decision when you want to do some work on your pavements. Here are some notable differences between asphalt and cement paving:

Durability

Concrete or cement paving tends to be more durable compared to asphalt paving. Asphalt paving can last 10-25 years if properly maintained, while concrete can last longer. Cement paving continues to gain strength with time. Climate plays a huge role in the durability of paving. Asphalt paving tends to decrease in durability due to extreme weather conditions.

Water from heavy rain can seep into the surfaces of asphalt paving, leading to potholes. Extreme heat can also lead to cracking of the asphalt paving. Cement or concrete paving is more resistant to harsh weather conditions. When cured, cement paving is resistant to moisture freezing and heat.

Oil leaks can also lead to damage to asphalt roads. Concrete roads, however, are resistant to damage caused by oil leaks.

Speed of Construction

Construction of cement paving may take significantly longer compared to asphalt paving. Cement paving requires using heavy machinery such as concrete mixers, concrete paving machinery, and transit mixers. It also takes time to cure concrete. As such, the speed of construction of cement paving is slower compared to asphalt paving. Consequently, it may take a longer time to construct cement paving.

On the other hand, asphalt paving does not require very large or heavy machinery. It takes less time to lay asphalt paving, which is why it is preferred as a paving choice. Due to the less investment in machinery, asphalt paving is fairly affordable. Additionally, the asphalt material is recyclable.

Flexibility

Cement paving is rigid and gets even stronger with time. Asphalt paving, on the other hand, is flexible, making it easy to maintain or repair. The flexible nature of asphalt also makes it easy to make customizable patterns on pavements. Asphalt repair is three times faster than cement paving. Additionally, when you stamp your paving in different designs, you do not have to completely get rid of the existing asphalt pavement; it can be heated and stamped into the desired pattern.
