Frequently Asked Questions About Asphalt Paving

Are you considering a new asphalt paving project for your commercial space or business? If so, you may have questions about the project, like when is the best time to plan one or how much will it cost. The experts at Pro-Pave, Inc. are here to answer some frequently asked questions we get about asphalt paving!

What is asphalt made of?

Asphalt is made from a mixture of binder, filler and aggregates like crushed rock, sand or gravel. Asphalt is actually a sustainable paving product that uses various recycled materials.

When should I plan an asphalt paving project?

It doesn’t take an expert to notice when it’s time to start a new paving project. Usually business owners notice tell-tale signs, like major cracks in the surface of an existing area or the presence of multiple large potholes. When it comes to the best time of year to pave a new asphalt area, it’s recommended to start a project in the late-spring, summer, or early-fall months. Generally, the best time for an asphalt project is when the temperature is above 70 degrees Farenheit.

How long should customers keep off of newly paved asphalt?

It’s generally recommended to stay off of a newly-paved asphalt surface for at least 24 hours. This means no walking or driving on the surface, to ensure the asphalt is set. If the temperature outside is a bit warmer, we recommend staying off the asphalt area for 1-2 days out of an abundance of caution.

How long will my asphalt surface last?

This question depends on the nature of your business. Asphalt parking lots withstand a great deal of pressure throughout the day, from foot traffic to vehicle traffic. With proper maintenance, an asphalt paved area can last for up to 30 years. However, if you are in an area that experiences heavy traffic or rough climate changes, it could be less than that.

What kind of maintenance is required?

As with all construction projects, proper maintenance is required for the best upkeep and return on your investment. As mentioned above, a properly maintained asphalt driveway can last up to 30 years! Yearly inspections can vastly extend the lifetime of your asphalt surface. During these regular inspections, surface issues like potholes or cracks can be assessed and fixed to prevent more damage down the line.

How much will a new asphalt paving project cost?

It’s hard to say, as each project is different! Some things to consider when pricing out a new asphalt paving project are whether the area needs a drainage system installed, or if the area should be excavated beforehand. Another factor to consider is if the existing foundation is in good shape, or if a new foundation needs to be poured before getting started.
